Ass Ache Adventures – Loretta Mecklenborg

When we were building All Out Adventures it was very much a trial and error affair. My dad, a seasoned developer with a couple of berg resorts to his name, used to laugh like crazy when we bemoaned our ill fate, and suggested we rename the business “Ass Ache Adventures”. It is a pretty apt name, because with a 8 different activities, each with about a thousand moving parts and all requiring specialist training to operate, as well as 150km of mountain bike tracks to maintain, there is ass ache a plenty!

On those days when the baboons have wrecked the water tank roof, the neighbours dogs have pulled out the trash – again, the new bridges and ramps on the trails have burnt in a runaway fire, a falling branch has smashed a guest’s windscreen, or we’ve sat through the marathon operations meetings which just generate another list of “to do’s” and “to do betters”, that moany voice in your head shouts “Really??? Is what you are doing actually of any use to anyone???”, and you begin to second guess EVERYTHING.

But then, you get a letter, like the one below, from the Head Prefect of Michaelhouse, Will Norton. The prefect group visited us as part of their leadership camp at the end of the summer holidays, and we had the best day. It answered that voice with a resounding YES. Yes, its useful, Yes, its worth it, and Yes we are blessed. Thank you Will 

23 January 2018

Dear Mr and Mrs Mecklenborg,

I would just like to thank you again for having the Michaelhouse prefects and the housemasters for a day of our leadership camp at All Out Adventures on Saturday!

It really was such a fun filled day and along with all the fun there were many lessons that the boys took out of it. It gave us the opportunity to see things from different perspectives and encourage us to see things from other people’s eyes. It gave us the opportunity to challenge ourselves and conquer our fears in the best way possible. It gave us the opportunity to learn more about ourselves and others while bonding and working together. It gave us the opportunity to start the year in the best of ways and it will be etched in all of our memories for this upcoming year and I am sure for the rest of our lives!

Thank you for all the effort you put in into making it such a special day. Your hard work and dedication allowed us to make the most of every second and we are all extremely grateful for that.

Chris, your talk at the beginning of the day really opened my eyes and caught my attention and I know this is a big ask but is it at all possible to maybe send me through a few parts of it as I really loved the ideas and thoughts that you spoke about?

I can’t thank you enough once again for being so welcoming and allowing us to explore ourselves and the environment around us with confidence.

I hope 2018 is a prosperous year for you both and I look forward to seeing more of you in the future.

Yours sincerely
Will Norton
